About Us
Macquarie River Food and Fibre was formed in 1996 as the need for a united group of irrigated agricultural producers in the region was realised. Over this time, the organisation has become one of the most progressive water user groups in Australia.
In an area from Burrendong Dam (Wellington) to the Macquarie Marshes, Macquarie River Food and Fibre represents more than 600 irrigators and their families, as well as a number of businesses associated with the irrigation industry.
Macquarie River Food and Fibre works to a Healthy Rivers Policy, which is based on the Healthy Rivers Commission definition, that encompasses the environmental, economic and social needs of the communities reliant on the river. It stresses the importance of a sustainable irrigation industry with secure, reliable water supplies, to the future health of the Macquarie Valley.
In line with our Healthy Rivers Policy, Macquarie River Food and Fibre aims to further the interests of our members by:
- Promoting sustainable production in the Macquarie Valley
- Ensuring broader community recognition that food and fibre production is a key component of Healthy Rivers
- Formulating guidelines and policies on matters relevant to our industry
- Making representation, when necessary, to appropriate Commonwealth, State and Local Government authorities on matters relevant to the industry
- Developing and implementing our group's role in the management, delivery and regulation of bulk water
- Educating and encouraging our farmers and all industry participants to constantly innovate and progress toward more resource efficient methods of production
